Thinking About Pencils: A Rap by Genevieve Berretta

As a writer I write to send a message. This is called Theme or TheMessage. As writers this why we write.  Can you determine my message and provide supporting details that support this theme?

So I’ve been thinking a lot lately about this current pencil situation
Now you know I think a pencil is an essential utensil

not to be argued over disrespected taken for granted or ground to a stump

or a stub cause it’s the latest sensation

Cause there are children
Who’d love that essential utensil
They run their index fingers or sticks in the dirt
To etch their words
In that dirt
To trace words over and over again
In that dirt
And then they or
the wind or the rain
Will scatter their words to the World
Wash their words away
And they hoping to remember what they created in that dirt

with their index fingers the very next day
And maybe they skywrite
With those index fingers or sticks
Up against a pale blue sky
Just to practice
To remember those words they learned
When they close their eyes
Memorized
Traced and
Etched in
brown dirt
Blue sky
Heart and mind

While you sit back
And take these essential utensils for granted
And argue about ownership
Or forget where you placed them

or perhaps just  break them

Cause you know I’ll hand you another one to replace them

So think about my message
The message I as a writer am sending
The lesson
maybe you learned
Cause I put my words to rhythm and rhyme
Count your blessings and never take anything that is handed to you for granted
Because there are those
Who need way more than a pencil
to stand up
