School is ALL I Think About by Eliana

Dear Children,

Have fun illustrating Eliana’s book about our “BEST SCHOOL EVER!!” Perhaps you might like to revise it as well, or write your “own” with your “own” words. What do you like about school? What are your favorite classes and why? If you think about school ALL of the time like Eliana, then perhaps you’d like to write your own book. Or perhaps your book will be about the things you think about ALL the time.  Invite Eliana to your classroom to share her story. Be well. Love, Mrs. Berretta

When I found out about P.S. 119, I begged my mom to go there and now…school is all I think about.

The teachers are all AWESOME!

The Technology teacher Mr. Jump, lets us use laptops. WE went on “New Key for Kids”. He also let us make our own Power Point Presentation.

My Media Arts teacher Ms. Hobson, is helping the environment. She has a recycling team and she takes care of the Recycling Program. I think her job is awesome!

My Language Art’s teacher Mrs. Berretta, is in charge of the poems and teaches us how to write stories about our social life, school and our families. I think her job is great!

I have a gym teacher, Mrs. McGuire and she helps us stay healthy by exercising. My music teacher Ms. Francis teaches us how to sing, dance and play instruments. Their jobs are super!

My Art teacher Mr. Clarke always says, “Creation time is quiet time,” and we all make art real quietly in his class.

Mrs. Gordon is in charge of the library and the books, When someone comes around with the “Open Access” sign…it’s time to take =out a book!

I saved the best for last. I mostly love my teacher Ms. Marks. She is beautiful and she has taught me so much in the 2nd grade. In third grade I am going to do well on all my tests! Thanks Ms. Marks. I love you and everything that you teach me.

But the people who makes everyone do their jobs is: the Assistant Principal Ms. Snow and the Principal Ms. Fernandez. They are the ultimate. They are the ones who make peace.

I think our school needs a trophy presented to them for being the “Best Public School” known as the “Peace Palace”. Thanks to Ms. Snow and Ms. Fernandez, without them…this school would not be the best.

My school is the BOMB!! I wish that I could go to P.S. 119 forever because…this school is ALL I think about!

Unseen beneath your skin… Abdel 5-305

We all had once to become another person.
A mean, cruel, person.
Yet even back then,
People weren’t the true person
They are now.
People have to be false.
Even I was false one time.
I am writing this so you be careful
with the people around you.
Betrayers all over the place.
So before you make a friend,
Think about who they really are.

Taking a Picture With Words: Haiku & Tanka By Genevieve Berretta

Picture this…you are out side on a beautiful day and you see two seagulls in the sky high above you. Did I mention that it was a cloudless day?  The sky was the bluest sky ever?  The stuff that crayola skyblue crayons, are designed after? Well, this happened to me recently as I was walking along Flatbush Avenue. Two seagulls caught my eye as they would dive, dip, soar and yes, I believe they were dancing with each other. “I wish I had my camera, ” I thought to myself, but not to worry, I have my memory, I have my words and I have…haiku:

On a skyblue stage
Two seagulls: dive, dip, and soar
I applaud the dance

How can haiku help me to recreate this show that was played out in the sky above me? Well, to me haiku is like taking a picture of a moment in nature with your words.  To me haiku in seventeen simple syllables, encompasses everything a good piece of writing should include: it should be concise; use poetic devices such as: metaphor, simile, figurative language, and personification to get your point across in that concise way–think a picture is worth a thousand words; it should be specific enough to create a picture in the reader’s mind; and in three lines, the first having five syllables, the second having seven syllables, and the third having five syllables, you have the framework for a beginning, middle and an end. Can you spot the literary devices I used in my haiku above? Do you get a picture? I tried real hard to use my words to put that picture into your head so you could enjoy the show as well.

If you feel the need to tell a longer story then consider a Tanka. A tanka extends that haiku two more lines where each line has seven syllables bringing the total number of syllables in a tanka to thirty one.  Please find below my tanka, and notice how a new setting is added and the picture  from the original haiku is expanded:

On a skyblue stage
Two seagulls: dive, dip, and soar
I applaud the dance
Standing below on the street
I watch and smile–hypnotized

As we study our Magnet countries, students used their knowledge of the geography of these regions, in addition to being exposed to images,,created the following haiku and tanka about: Brazil and South Africa. Try to draw the pictures their words evoke.  Have fun and enjoy your journey to Brazil and Africa!

P.S. 119 Rocks the Mock Trial

On April 8th, class 5-305 had their mock trial in the library. This mock trial was an added advantage to being in the Legal Lives program run by Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes. Over forty schools in New York City participated, and each class worked with an Assistant District Attorney or ADA over the school year. Parents, teachers, Ms. Snow and Mrs. Fernandez, were in attendance as the class acted out a trial script they had to memorize. “We have been practicing everyday to get a good grade. But lets face it, when you’re sure that you will be Defense or Prosecutor, ending up in Supreme Court, it is nerve racking. I memorized my part so I feel confident” Abdelrahman Saleh said when asked about the trial. Complete with costumes and props, the mock trial was a success! ADA Joel Dowling worked with Class 5-305, teaching them about the law and helping them with their April 8th mock trial performance. 5-305 performed like real lawyers and received 99 points from two ADA’s who scored our performance. Class 5-305 will be competing in Supreme Court against a class that received 100 points and there will be more news to report.

As I said earlier, my class 5-305 was involved in a Mock Trial. I was very nervous to get up there alone. But it was worth it. We got 99 points. We broke last years record of 98 points. We are now going to the SUPREME COURT. I shall report about this when the day comes. – Abdel

It’s Kid’s Choice for the 2nd Grade by Kelis, Tatiana & Nicky

On Friday morning April 3rd, it was the biggest day of our lives. We were all excited. The second grade classes had the “First Annual Kids Choice Awards!” Every second grade class performed Tatiana said, “I was nervous.” Nicky said, “My head felt nervous, but not me!”

Our class sang the country song, “Days Go By” by Keith Urban. Pritpal was dressed like Keith Urban. Nicky and Stephanie introduced the song to the audience. We were all dressed in costumes. We wore cowboy and cowgirl hats. Ms. Francis gave us the moves and we practiced hard with Ms. Jackson . We performed twice. First for the parents and then we performed for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Kelis has this to say about the show, “I wasn’t nervous. It was the greatest day of my life.”
